A downloadable game

24XX is built on a clean rule: roll only to avoid risk. It's elegant right up until your players go quiet, careful infiltration, a tense negotiation, the empty beat between fights, and suddenly there's no risk, no roll, and no fiction moving except what you, the GM, invent on the spot. This patch fixes that gap without touching a single word of the core resolution system.

What's in the box

  • Situation — A new roll that fires exactly when the skill roll doesn't: no risk, no dice, the world stays silent. Read a die from how settled things feel (d4 chaotic to d12 stable), roll, and let Trouble, Signs, or Calm tell you what happens next. No tracker, no meter, just the fiction itself deciding the odds.
  • Opponents — A lightweight framework for building NPCs out of Behavior, Risks, and Obstacles instead of skill dice, so enemies act with their own logic instead of GM fiat.
  • Conflict — The same Situation engine, retooled for fights. Press, Shift, and Opening replace Trouble, Signs, and Calm, giving combat a natural rhythm, and a natural ending, without hit points or initiative order.
  • Solo Play — Run 24XX with no GM at all. A simple Declare/Assess/Roll/Interpret loop uses the Situation die to decide when you need to roll, a Question Oracle (yes/no rolls scaled to how likely an outcome is) to answer anything you can't judge for yourself, and Sparks, a two-die prompt generator (Action + Theme) for kickstarting missions or breaking through a creative block.

Why it exists

Every 24XX table I run eventually hits the same wall: quiet scenes where nothing forces a roll, so the GM ends up carrying the entire scene alone, deciding everything unassisted. This patch gives the dice a second job, generating facts nobody planned, so the referee isn't the only voice in the room anymore. It does this without adding a single resource to track: no heat, no suspicion counters, no stress pools. The die is read fresh from the fiction every time, which keeps the whole thing feeling like 24XX rather than a different game wearing its skin.

Compatibility

Drop these three sections straight into your existing 24XX SRD. Nothing is removed, nothing is renamed, nothing conflicts with "roll only to avoid risk." It's an addition, not a replacement.
